As things start to unravel, the pace picks up, and things become really action packed really quickly. It reads like a classic 90’s teen drama, where Jess’s problems are largely which boy to go to the prom with, her sisters illness and her overbearing mother. The first half is a slow burner, we are introduced to her friends, her family and her life as a whole. What I liked most about This is Not the Jess Show is that it’s perfectly paced. I really enjoyed the read, it has elements of The Truman Show but mixed in with Black Mirror, because you can really feel society wandering in this dangerous direction with the amount our private lives are now on display constantly. You’ll find yourself looking around you and wondering if you’re being watched and if everything you think you know, is actually real…. I’d challenge anyone to read this book and not feel a certain element of paranoia. And then one day, a tiny, sleek black device–with an apple logo on it–falls out of her best friend’s backpack and lands at Jess’s feet. Conversations end awkwardly when Jess enters the room. Half the population has been struck down by a mysterious flu. Swickley is getting weirder by the day, too.

Between a new crush on her childhood best friend, overprotective parents cramping her social life, and her younger sister’s worsening health, the only constant is change–and her hometown of Swickley, which feels smaller by the day. Like any other teenager, Jess Flynn is just trying to get through her junior year without drama … but drama seems to keep finding her.
